I believe on playing your role in everything you do.
Many have stories about Roc Raida and how he inspired them to pic up turntables and start rock shocking the house, my story is the same but not really. Well not so much of a story but a lesson. Like many others I used to watch Dj Battle tapes, yes tapes! VHS! Beatjunkies, Skratch Pickles and of curse The X Men (X-Ecutioners), these are some of the crews I remember. As far as the X-Men these are the guys I remember seeing in the crew and what I thought of them by watching the tapes; Rob Swift (the serious one), Mista Sinista (the one that was having fun), Total Eclipse (the young, innocent one) and Roc Raida (the ASSHOLE!).
Yup! The asshole. Asshole not in the sense of “damn I met that dude and he knocked down my ice cream then laughed at me” but asshole in the sense of “he’s so fucking dope it doesn’t even look like he’s trying, is NOT fair”. Today I know Raida was a nice, fun loving, whatever you need I got you type dude, but back then he was the “you battling me, HA! You must be stupid” “I am going to embarrass you in front of your girl, moms and friends” type.
I could go on and on about how incredible Raida was, how he CHANGED the Dj culture, how him alongside others brought the Dj back to the forefront (if only for a brief moment in time). But to me Raida amongst others is the reason why Sucio Smash is NOT a battle Dj. Of course I could’ve stopped playing basketball and practiced 12 hrs a day but like I said before I know what role to play. I also know my limitations and unlike Raida I am only human.
Rest In Power! The world will always miss you.
